ShopMyBB Closure

ShopMyBB is closed. You may read the letter below for more information. (letter below was posted on June 10, 2011.)

The goal behind ShopMyBB was to create a single venue where buyers can purchase items from their favorite authors without the need to subscribe to a dozen subscription sites. Unfortunately, this idea was not widely accepted by the MyBB community, and I understand that.

I know many of you might blame me for the outcome of ShopMyBB because you might think that I did not market it enough, or I did not do something that could have given the project a turn. ShopMyBB received a substantial amount of traffic in its life, and many MyBB users knew of its existence. Ad campaigns were run across third party MyBB sites, and ShopMyBB has sponsored a good deal of giveaways. Ultimately, MyBB users and authors were hesitant to give ShopMyBB a try, which is understandable when a new idea is introduced into a community. No doubt, however, there are things that could have been done to the service to improve it, as with any other service out on the web. You can think of ShopMyBB as a test or experiment; it has not succeeded.

On that note, withdrawals have been opened to any amount to give you the opportunity to withdraw any balance remaining in your accounts. This opportunity is open from June 10, 2011 - September 10, 2011 PDT. I feel that a 3 (three) month period is long enough to take the time to withdraw any remaining amounts from your account, download your items, or do whatever else you might want to do before the service becomes inactive (in accordance to the Terms and Conditions). If you do not want to withdraw your remaining account balance but instead shop around, purchasing items is still open, so you have the opportunity to spend it on items you may have been considering. Deposits into an account however are no longer being accepted.

Any remaining account balances after September 30, 2011 PDT will be collected and donated to the MyBB Group MyBB.com. This does not mean that you should not withdraw your remaining account balance because you want it donated to the MyBB Group. ShopMyBB asks that you withdraw your remaining account balance(s), and if you decide to donate it to the MyBB Group, to do so yourself.

A series of emails will be sent out about the closure of the ShopMyBB service to account holders (ShopMyBB Members). A total of 3 (three) emails will be sent, spread across the time period (June 10, 2011 - September 10, 2011 PDT). After September 10, 2011 PDT, a final email will be sent to account holders with positive (greater than 0 (zero)) account balances, and will be given the opportunity to withdraw their remaining account balances until September 30, 2011 PDT.

I personally thank every one of you for being a part of ShopMyBB and supporting the service. If you have any questions or concerns that have not been answered by the list of questions below, do get in touch by contacting us using our Support Form here.

Thanks a bunch!

Best Regards,
Imad Jomaa.

Question and Answer List

- How Can I withdraw my account balance?
Make sure you are logged in, and follow the "My Account" link in the upper right corner of the header. From there, follow the "Withdrawal" link in the navigation bar. The link will generally be the second to last link on the right of the bar.

- Can I purchase a copy of the script ShopMyBB used?
I received this question a lot before ShopMyBB's closure. The answer is no. Starting a service like ShopMyBB is definitely not an "install a script and your live" ordeal. There implications when starting such a service. Most importantly, you really need to do your research on local laws and regulations to understand what your service classifies under, and in general, what you can and cannot do. In addition to that, the script or system (whatever you want to call it) is not really built as a plug-in-play. There are certain server requirements and configurations that need to be done to ideally run the script comfortably and efficiently. Thanks for the interest however. =)

- Can I purchase the domain ShopMyBB.com once ShopMyBB is completely closed?
Currently, I have no plans on selling or otherwise transferring ownership of the domain.
